How to Laser Cut Acrylic: Settings, Tips & Common Mistakes

Acrylic is the favourite laser material for a reason: it cuts with clean, flame-polished edges, engraves beautifully, and comes in more colours and patterns than almost anything else you can put on a laser bed. Here's what you need to know to get great results.

Which lasers can cut acrylic?

  • CO2 lasers are ideal. Even a 40W desktop CO2 machine cuts 3mm acrylic in a single pass and engraves it crisply. If you own a CO2 laser, acrylic will quickly become your go-to material.
  • Diode lasers are more limited. Blue diode light passes straight through clear and lightly tinted acrylic, so most diodes cannot cut it. Dark, opaque colours absorb the beam and can be cut slowly with higher-powered diodes, and many opaque sheets engrave well. If you run a diode, test on dark solids first.
  • Fibre lasers are generally unsuitable for standard acrylic — they're built for metal marking.

Starting settings for 3mm cast acrylic

Every machine is different, so treat your manufacturer's material chart as the starting point and run a small test grid on an offcut. As a rough guide, a 40–60W CO2 cuts 3mm cast acrylic in one pass at moderate speed and high power; lower-powered machines just need slower speed or a second pass. For engraving, cast acrylic turns a soft frosty white, so a light engraving pass usually gives plenty of contrast.

Tips for cleaner results

  • Leave the masking on when cutting. The paper film protects the surface from flashback marks and small spatter around the cut line.
  • Focus on the material surface. A correctly focused beam gives the narrowest kerf and the glossiest edge.
  • Go easy on air assist. A gentle airflow keeps the cut clear without dulling that flame-polished edge; a strong blast can leave a frosted, streaky finish.
  • Lift the sheet off the bed on a honeycomb or pins where you can — it reduces reflection marks on the underside.
  • Keep your lens clean. Acrylic cutting produces sticky vapour; a dirty lens loses power fast.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting too fast leaves an uncut web on the underside — parts won't drop free. Slow down slightly rather than maxing power.
  • Cutting too slow melts the edge and rounds fine detail.
  • Skipping the test cut on a new colour or batch. Two minutes of testing saves a ruined sheet.

Safety

Always run good extraction — acrylic vapour is unpleasant and flammable — and never leave a cutting job unattended. And a rule worth repeating to every new laser owner: never cut PVC or vinyl. It releases corrosive chlorine gas that damages lungs and machines. If you're unsure what a mystery plastic is, don't cut it.
